Vertebrates are members of a sub-phylum of chordates, characterised by a spine which protects the notochord.
The Subphylum Vertebrata includes reptiles, mammals, fish and birds.
The vertebrate fossil record begins with the appearances of Myllokunmingia fengjiaoa and Haikouichthys ercaicunensis[1] in the Cambrian period (of China, respectively).
