TyrannosauridaeOsborn, 1905 sensu Holtz, 2001

The tyrannosaurids represent the most famous of all theropods, and include the legendary Tyrannosaurus rex--the "tyrant king lizard." Tyrannosaurids represent a major radiation of theropods in the Cretaceous, and their taxonomy and phylogeny has recently been reviewed by Holtz (in Tanke & Carpenter 2001). Holophyly of Tyrannosauridae is robustly supported, with Holtz's most recent analysis isolating 39 synapomorphies of the tyrannosaurid lineage.
