[edit] Geologic and Paleotectonic Environment

Geologically Pangaea remained intact, although an incipient split was beginning to occur along a spreading ridge extending from the Tethys Ocean along the old suture zone between the African and North American plates. The Cimmerian and Cathayasian orogenies were occurring as fragmented terrains (including: Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Tibet and Malaysia) were being accreted to the southern Eurasian plate. The Sonoman orogeny was occurring as terraines were accreting along the southwest North American plate. The Southern US was on the equator and central Greenland and Scandinavia were at about 30oN.
