Toxicofera is a clade within the suborder Squamata that contains the iguanians (iguanas, agamas, and chameleons), the varanoids (monitor, earless lizards, gila monsters), the mosasaurs, and the snakes. Toxicofera was proposed after recent studies suggest that venom originated when genes for bile production were duplicated and spliced into genes for saliva production in an ancestral iguanian 220 million years ago.
