Total clade

A total clade (or total group) refers to any crown clade and all extinct outgroups that share more recent common ancestry with it than with another crown. For example, Ornithosuchia is a total clade in that it contains the crown Neornithes and all extinct outgroups more closely related to birds than to crocodiles, another crown clade. In turn, Ornithosuchia is the sister clade to the crocodile total clade, Pseudosuchia (sensu Gauthier).
