Talk:Western civilization

Sorry for my spelling I try to improve.

I moved the Hypatia incident to Roman Empire because it happened 415AD. Wikipedia:Alexandria also mentions

In the late 4th century, persecution of pagans by Christians had reached new levels of intensity. Temples and statues were destroyed throughout the Roman empire: pagan rituals became forbidden under punishment of death, and libraries were closed. In 391, Emperor Theodosius ordered the destruction of all pagan temples, and the Patriarch Theophilus, complied with his request. It is possible that the great Library of Alexandria was destroyed about this time.

I think, even though they occured in Alexandria, both incidents fit within the context of the Christianisation of the Roman Empire. Markus Schmaus 23:35, 20 March 2006 (GMT)

The stated purpose of the article is to demonstrate that much of Western Civilization isn't a result of Christianity. Does the reference to the murder of Hypatia really belong here? It doesn't seem to be something non-Christian contributed to Western Civ. Either the stated page scope should be broadened to include Christian anti-contributions, or the Hypatia reference should be removed, possibly to a page dedicated to Christian anti-contributions to Western Civ. --Suttkus 03:50, 21 March 2006 (GMT)
Perhaps we could move Hypatia's murder and the destruction of the Library of Alexandria to a rebuttal to creationists' claims about Christianity being all-good or without flaw?--Mr A. 05:03, 21 March 2006 (GMT)
I'm not too fond of the rebuttal pages. Sometimes I think one of the responses is wrong, sometimes the responses contradict each other. Setting up a page as Western Civilisation (maybe it should be renamed Western Civilization) allows to concisly present the arguments. Markus Schmaus 13:04, 21 March 2006 (GMT)
I added it because it is an example of Christianity actively fighting and hindering Western Civilization. The Library is another example for that. But if you think it doesn't belong here, remove it. --tk (t) 09:22, 21 March 2006 (GMT)
Okay, I went ahead and made the adjustment to the stated purpose to expand the scope of the page. It seemed the best solution. I also standardized the spelling of civilisation/civilization. Both are correct, I believe, but it looks cheesy to use both. --Suttkus 02:32, 22 March 2006 (GMT)
It seems that ...ization is American English and ...isation is British English. In List of creationist organizations there is the same problem. Maybe we should discuss this in EvoWiki:Discussions/Manual_of_Style#Spelling. --tk (t) 10:03, 22 March 2006 (GMT)
