Technically, the ostracodermsheterostracans are considered to be the first vertebrates, and the earliest fossils date from the Ordovician... Ergo, the vertebrate fossil record starts there, not in the Silurian.--Mr A. 17:35, 15 February 2006 (GMT)

Uhh... Haikouicthys/Haikouella? Aren't they vertebrates from the Cambrian? - Procyon

They're related to the vertibrates. Proxima Centauri 15:04, 22 July 2008 (BST)
Ahh, thanks. So the first vertebrates were Ordovician, then. Damn your misinformation, Walking with Monsters. :P Procyon
Haikouichthys and Haikouella were chordates, akin to free-swimming lancets, but were not true vertebrates. The first true vertebrates/fishes were Ordovician chordates like Arandaspis, Sacambaspis, and Astrolepis.--Mr A. 20:51, 22 July 2008 (BST)
