Talk:Fossil Sorting

This talk of catastrophism reminded me... Should we mentin Joachim Barrande, a French scholar of Prague who was a big proponent of catastrophism, or should we mention others of note?--Mr A. 19:54, 19 June 2006 (BST)

There should certainly be a page on Catastrophism, in all the incarnations of the term, but it's not really central to this article.

More examples! More! MORE!

Or no more. I could come up with further examples of fossil sorting that violate all creationist proposals for fossil sorting for weeks on end, but I think we have enough for the main article. Would it be worthwhile for any purpose other than my own entertainment to link to a subsidary article filled with yet more examples?

Like why, although the sponge-like Archaeocyathids had about as much hydrodynamic qualities as modern day corals, forming reefs in the Cambrian, we never see any corals associated with them ever? Also, how would Creationists explain why corals are not found at the very bottom (ie, in Precambrian and Cambrian levels)? (Paleontologists have a simple explaination, in that anthozoan cnidarians had not developed the ability to secrete calcium carbonate and argonite until the Ordovician)--Mr A. 17:17, 24 June 2006 (BST)
I was in the middle of starting a section on the shift in reef-builder population over time when I started to think I might have done enough, but there's so much more that could be done! Why are moths with sucking mouths sorted above layers of moths with chewing mouths? Why do bivalve clams get sorted above layers of clams with united shells? Why aren't brachiopods and clams sorted the same? Why do trilobite fossils not get sorted above the Permian? And why don't creationists deal with these problems that oppose every mechanism they have? Oh, wait, I answered that one already!
--Suttkus 22:34, 24 June 2006 (BST)
A) Why not do them all, starting with shifts in reef-building organisms and their communities? and B) Don't they always stick their fingers in their ears and sing "Tingalingalu"?
And by "clams with united shells," you mean the Rostroconchs?--Mr A. 23:41, 24 June 2006 (BST)
That sounds right. I'm too lazy to go check right now.  :-)

Sources?

Interesting. Are there sources for all of the arguments / counter-arguments? --CobraA1 from wikipedia

They're easily found, if you want to take the time to do it. Doing a proper job of referencing is on my to-do list, but takes more time than I've had to devote to it lately. Is there anything in particular you're interested in? The article is a summation of 20+ years of debating creationists and an entire life of reading up on fossils. --Suttkus 00:53, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
I'm not interested in the debate; I've done my share of debating in plenty of places. We could do the argument/counter-argument style debate until our faces turn blue. I'd much rather prefer to find the information easily so I can see where both sides stand currently - and where both sides think the other side stands currently. --CobraA1
