Sugars are simple carbohydrates, with the general formula (CH2OH)n (where n is usually between 3 and 7). In common usage, outside of science, sugar refers to the most common disaccharide, sucrose.

Complex sugars can be formed by the linkage of simpler sugars through ester bonds.
