Schizognathous

Schizognathous, a palatal type in class Aves characterized by the following traits:

  1. Vomer sometimes small, but present, usually terminating in a point rostrally.
  2. Maxillopalatines variable in size and shape, and do not meet at the midline with each other or with the vomers.

Schizognathy is widespread among birds, occurring in forms as disparate as the Charadriiformes and the Sphenisciformes.
