S. M. Kurzanov, Russian paleontologist. Kurzanov discovered and described the enigmatic Avimimus portentosus from the Upper Cretaceous Nemegt Basin, in the Gobi Desert (1985, 1987). A marvelous animal, displaying a mosaic of avian and more plesiomorphic theropod attributes, Avimimus was almost certainly a neoflightless post-urvogel (Paul 2002). Kurzanov has also proposed a degree of neoflightless development in Theropoda as a whole (Kurzanov 1981, 1982, 1985, 1987).
