Reptilia (named by Carl von Linne sensu Gauthier, 1984) is a class of vertebrates, commonly known as the reptiles. The group is defined as the common ancestor of extant saurians and turtles, and all descendants thereof. There are approximately 8,000 contemporary reptile species, and the group is represented on all continents except antartica.
Autapomorphies of Reptila include:
- small tabular
- presense of a suborbital foramen
- narrow supraoccipital
- presense of supraoccipital anterior crista
Most reptiles are tetrapods and all are amniotes.
