R. M. Chandler is a paleornithologist who has carried out the most extensive review of the type material of Titanus walleri, a marvelous phorusrhacid which invaded the southern portion of North America during the Great American Interchange. Chandler has discovered most of the material attributed to this taxon and arguably knows more of it than any other paleornithologist. His research indicates that Titanus was in fact extant until relatively recently (geologically speaking), and his recovery of forelimb elements suggests that in this species at least, the manus may have been modified such that it possessed a singular claw for assistance in prey capture and manipulation (Chandler 1994).
