No, but it is significantly different from standard evolutionary theory that Stephen Jay Gould was in constant dispute with other notable biologists, including John Maynard Smith and Richard Dawkins. Gould has been dead for four years now (Maynard Smith has been dead for two), and nobody seems to be picking up "punctuated equilibrium" in his stead.
  2. Punctuated equilibrium is in fact supportive of evolutionary theory in that speciation events occur, like changes in the environment, which catalyze a change in a species phenotype. Once the morphological change is able to counteract the change in the environment, equilibrium is once again reached.
