A phylum is part of the hierarchy of groups used to classify organisms in Carolus Linnaeus' system of taxonomy. Phyla are beneath kingdoms and above classes.

Phylum was not one of Linnaeus' original groups, but was added to his system by later taxonomists.

Phylum is primarily used to classify animals, with an equivalent group, division used for plants and fungi.
