Life and Evolution
Major events include a terminal mass extinction in which all trilobites along with 95% of all marine invertebrate species and some 70% of terrestrial species became extinct. The typically dry climates of the Permian led to the evolution of large seed bearing plants with covered seeds, the conifers, along with the decline of the ferns.
Geologic and Paleotectonic Environment
Geologically the Appalachian and Ouachita orogenies were in their final stages between North America and Africa and South America. The supercontinent of Pangea reached its maximum extent. The Ural orogenies were developing Eurasia. Glaciation across southern Africa.
