Neuroptera, net-veined insects. Enigmatic insects characterized by their unique pattern of wing venation (as the name implies), there are approximately 4,500 species worldwide of which the best known may be the highly predaceous lacewings (Chrysopidae). Poor fliers, they possess formidable jaws though they lack cerci. The order is generally considered most beneficial, and chrysopids are enlisted in organic pest control.
