Neognathous palate

Neognathous palate, a derived condition in Aves in which palatal mobility has been increased via the following modifications (Feduccia 1980, 1996):

a)Basipterygoid articulation with braincase absent

b)Pterygoid/Palatine joint present

c)Vomers reduced such that they do not extend caudally to the pterygoid, or are lost entirely.
