Monophyly

Monophyly is a term which refers to a taxon comprised of members derived from a common ancestor which includes all descendants. Because monophyly had frequently been used by authors to denote a taxon derived from an exclusive common ancestor but not necessarily all descendants of that ancestor, some authors prefer to use the term holophyly.
