Mitosis is the process of eukaryotic cell division that produces daughter cells genetically identical to each other and the parent cell. This is a form of reproduction in asexual organisms and a means of growth (by increase of somatic cells) in sexual organisms. The process typically consists of four stages: prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase. Compare to meiosis.
