The Missippian which runs from 359-325Ma is the first sub division of the Carboniferous period. The Mississippian period immediately follows the Devonian-Carboniferous Extinction Event. This extinction event occurred at the very end of the Devonian period, killing off 75% of all species. Important events that happened during this time included the rapid diversification of sharks and holocephalids due to the extinction of placoderms, the appearance of the first winged insects (which had three pairs of functional wings at the time), the evolution of the amniontic egg in conjunction with the first appearance of primitive reptiles. Also the Appalachian mountains formed during the Mississippian epoch.
