Mandible
From EvoWiki
The mandible refers to the two paired sets of bones of the lower jaw.
In all non-mammalian amniotes, each the mandible is made up of five pairs of bones, all but two of which are not present at all in mammals:
- Articular (articulates with the quadrate of the cranium)
- Suprangular/Surangular
- Angular
- Splenial
- Dentary (fused into single bone in all amniotes)
In mammals, the articular bone forms the Malleus of the inner ear and the dentary bone makes up the entirety of the jawbone (as such it is usually referred to as just the 'mandible'). It is made of two main parts:
- Body of mandible
- Ramus mandibulae (which articulate with the squamosal of the cranium)
