A list of all major clades subsumed within Theropoda.

• Tetanurae - Stem-based taxon containing all forms that share more recent common ancestry with Neornithes than with Ceratosaurus.

• Ceratosauria - Stem-based taxon containing all forms that share more recent common ancestry with Ceratosaurus than with Neornithes.

• Neotheropoda - Node-based taxon containing the common ancestor of Neornithes and Ceratosaurus, and all descendents.

• Avetheropoda - Node-based taxon containing the common ancestor of Coelurosauria and Carnosauria, and all descendents.

• Neotetanurae - Node-based taxon containing the common ancestor of allosauroids and coelurosaurs, and all descendents. Established by Sereno et al in 1994, in is thus a junior synonym of Avetheropoda.

• Coelurosauria - Stem-based taxon containing all forms closer to Neornithes than to Allosaurus.

• Carnosauria - Stem-based taxon containing all forms closer to Allosaurus than to Neornithes.

• Maniraptoriformes - Node-based taxon containing the common ancestor of ornithomimosaurs and neornithines, and all descendents.

• Arctometatarsalia - Stem-based taxon containing all forms closer to Ornithomimus than to Neornithes.

• Maniraptora - Stem-based taxon containing all forms closer to Neornithes than to Ornithomimus.
