A lysosome is a cell organelle found in the cytoplasmic space of eukaryotic cells. These small spherical vesicles are usually 0.2-0.5 micrometers in diameter. Lysosomes have only a singele membrane, and contain a powerful digestive enzyme, acid hydrolase. Lysosomes are used either to digest fat, protein, or carbohydrate particles within a food vacuole, or when a cell undergoes apoptosis, where a change in pH causes the cell's lysosomes to release the acid hydrolases contained to begin degrading the dying cell's other organelles. Lysosomes are formed from acid hydrolase-filled vesicles that bud off from the Golgi Apparatus.
