List of categories

While the page Special:Categories (or [1]) is automatically generated with the latest used [[Category:xxx]] tags it is not very useful for looking at the structure of categories and thus receiving guidance of which to use. Interestingly in a wiki that is heavily involved in taxonomy it appears we need a taxonomy (or is it ontology?) of categories.
Unfortunately producing this page by hand means it will soon be out-of-date, but hopefully anyone who decides to add a new category will kindly update this page. Also the structure of categories is not strictly hierarchical since some sub-categories may under under multiple categories in different parts of the tree.
After a review of 141 categories (--Dmill96 09:20, 1 April 2006 (BST)) and some shuffling of all the existing categories a reasonable (I hope) structure is in place.
Note: This page Special:Uncategorizedpages is a good starting point for adding categories to articles or potentially deciding on new categories.

Note: These categories also largely existed in this structure when I (--Dmill96 10:02, 1 April 2006 (BST)) found them, but I've reorganized them a little. In the future I would recommend adding any new sub-categories for a type of scientist under the Category:Scientists.

Note: Only a small fraction of the Tree of Life already existed as categories when I (--Dmill96 10:02, 1 April 2006 (BST)) first organized this. Most of these categories do not (currently) have an articles so it seems appropriate to only expand the sub-categories within Tree of Life as actual articles are written.'
