Lipids (Greek: lipos "fat") are organic compounds that do not dissolve easily in water, (but do dissolve in non-polar solvents). There are many forms of lipids, including fatty acids (fats and oils), waxes, steroids, terpenes/terpenoids (a.k.a. essential oils), prostaglandins and phospholipids.
