Claim

There is room for all the animals aboard the ark by taking juveniles of the largest animals (animals larger than about 10 kg = 22 lb.).

Responses

  1. There is no explicit statement in the Bible that any of the animals in the ark were juveniles. And why would juveniles board the ark without their mothers? In fact, the Bible, itself, contradicts this claim, as it specifically stated that Noah brought one of each kind of animal, and his mate on board the Ark.
  2. The young of large animals all require significant parental care. If only juveniles were brought on board the Ark, not only would they be helpless (and thus require much more attention from the humans), but they would also lack the socialization necessary for them to survive in the wild after the flood.
  3. Even if true, this does not solve the "impossible capacity" objection to the ark myth. If we (somewhat inexplicably) assume that the average juvenile has only 10% the weight of an adult, we're still talking about half a million kilograms (600 short tons) of weight, before food is added. The ark would have to have been designed considerably more sophisticatedly than the ancient Romans ever managed with their own ships (about 400 short tons), how many thousands of years after Noah was supposed to have lived. Supposing that Roman shipbuilders (drawing from centuries of established techniques) just happened to be incompetent compared to old Noah (who winged it, with no help from anyone except God) amounts to a ridiculous Canceling Hypotheses.
  4. This claim is a poorly constructed Just So Story concocted to ease Noah's task of filling the Ark. Those creationists who use this claim have absolutely no ability to comprehend the prodigious amount of care required by the young of "large animals." The care of orphaned rhinoceros and elephant calves is staggering enough, but, can one imagine the effort needed to raise a pair of grapefruit-sized Apatosaurus eggs to adulthood with only eight people?

Fallacies contained in this claim

  • Just So Story (made up on the spot to fit a myth)
  • Canceling Hypotheses (If Noah was able to build such a fantastic ship, then how come all other shipbuilding civilizations after Noah were so incompetent by comparison?)
