Joseph Banks

Joseph Banks (1743-1820) was a British naturalist whos primary interest was botany. He was the first scientific director of Kew Gardens, ran the Royal Society for decades, and was the naturalist on James Cook's Endeavour expedition. Banks was a pioneer of Linnaeus' system of taxonomy, discovering plants such as eucalyptus, acacia, mimosa, and the genus named after him, Banksia.
Banks collected plants from Newfoundland, South America, Iceland, New Zealand and Australia, where he named Botany Bay, near Sydney.
