Isotopes are atoms of the same element which have different numbers of neutrons which gives them a different atomic mass. Two isotopes of the same element behave essentially identically in chemical reactions. They are separable by mass and identified and studied by mass spectroscopy and other techniques.

The word, which is Greek for "at the same place" (in the periodic table) is often wrongly used instead of nuclide.
