Infraphylum

Definition

An infraphylum (pl: "infraphyla") is a taxonomic unit, or taxon, used in zoology to indicate a subdivision of the taxon Subphylum. It ranks in between Subphylum and Superclass in Linnean-based taxonomy. Infraphlya are only proposed if subphyla already exist.


Example

Gnathostomata is the infraphylum of subphylum Vertebrata to which are assigned all jawed vertebrates.

Kingdom: Animalia

Superphylum: Deuterostomia

Phylum: Chordata

Subphylum: Vertebrata

Infraphylum: Gnathostomata
