Ichthyosaurs were a group of diapsid reptiles that first appeared in the early Triassic, around 250 million years ago, and went extinct in the early Cretaceous, around 90 million years ago. They were the most diverse and successful during the Jurassic period however during the Cretaceous they became replaced by the Plesiosaurs. They averaged around 2 to 6 meters, with a notable few being both larger and smaller, and all known species resembled dolphins, albeit with very long beaks.
