Hugo De Vries
From EvoWiki
Hugo de Vries (1848-1935) was a Dutch botanist and Professor at the University of Amsterdam. In 1905, de Vries discovered a polyploid speciation event in Oenothera lamarckiana (Evening Primrose) which he named Oenothera gigas. This unexpected discovery led him to methodological insights still used in evolutionary biology today.
He is probably best known, however, for his independent rediscovery of the work of Gregor Mendel, along with Carl Correns and, possibly, Erich Tschermak.
