Claim

The earth was relatively flat before Noah's Flood. Most of the world's high mountains were formed during the Flood. This explains how all the waters in the oceans could cover all the mountains at the time. It also explains how mountains formed (from the violence accompanying the Flood) and the existence of marine fossils on mountains.

  1. The first thing to keep in mind is that this claim contradicts the Bible which YECs claim to be a Divinely inerrant source of information. If the Earth was indeed relatively flat before the Flood, how could Scripture say, "And the waters prevailed so mightily upon the earth that all the high mountains were covered" (Gen 7:19)? In addition to this Scriptural difficulty, there are a number of mundane scientific problems...
  2. If the world were relatively flat (albeit in a round sort of way) wouldn't the water required for the flood already have covered all flat land?
  3. The claim actually does not explain how it thinks mountains formed, except as a hand-wave and a brief mumble about "violence". One-word explanations are not explanations, whether the word is "violence" or "God".
  4. "Violence" from the Flood does not explain the presence of seashells on mountains, as "violence" would have smashed shells into pieces and separated fragments and valves (if they were bivalves).
  5. This claim completely ignores plate tectonics.
