Guanine
From EvoWiki
(Redirected from Guanosine)
Guanine (2-amino, 6-oxy purine) is an organic base used in many important biological molecules, including nucleic acids.
In Watson-Crick base pairing guanine pairs with cytosine.
When guanine pairs with a ribose sugar it forms the nucleoside guanosine. Up to three phosphate groups can be added to guanosine to form:
- Guanosine phosphate (GMP) - a constituent of nucleic acids
- Guanosine diphosphate (GDP) and guanosine triphosphate (GTP) - used as energy carriers in some metabolic reactions (similar to Adenosine triphosphate)
