To save time writing out the same piece of text repeatedly on lots of different pages we can use Templates containing the default text for different situations. You can add the text from a template to a page in one of the following ways:

• {{TemplateName}} - Use this when you want the text on the page to be updated whenever the template is updated (this will simply add the text {{TemplateName}} to the page, which will we replaced with the template each time the page is viewed).

• {{subst:TemplateName}} - Use this to add the current template text to the page (this will add the template text directly to the page, not the code for the template).

Note: It appears that adding category tags to templates after pages containing the templates have already been created does not cause those existing pages to be in categories. Interestingly simply doing an edit and immediate save (doesn't even show in history or recent changes) causes changes for the template to be incorporated in the page. Perhaps other changes to templates will have this same effect. --Dmill96 23:57, 2 April 2006 (BST). Actually it's somewhat more subtle, adding categories to template does cause existing pages to have the category navigation at the bottom of the page, but the Special:Uncategorizedpages is not updated and shows no category. Articles copied from other copylefted sources

Wikipedia {{wikipedia}} must be added to articles where text is copied from Wikipedia, as they use a different license to us. The template looks like this:
