Ernst Mayr

Ernst Mayr (5 July 1904 - 3 February 2005) was a German evolutionary biologist, ornithologist and science writer, one of the best known biologists of the twentieth century. His work has contributed to the theories of Mendelian genetics, allopatric speciation and punctuated equilibrium, and Mayr was amoungst the architects of the modern synthesis. Mayr has written many books, and repeatedly states the evolutionary importance of factors other than allele frequencies, and that evolutionary pressure acts on whole organisms, not just individual genes.
