Elman R. Service

Elman R. Service (1915-1996) was a cultural anthropologist who taught at Columbia University (1949-1953), University of Michigan (1953-1968) and the University of California at Santa Barbara from 1968 until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of a number of learned societies, including the American Ethnological Society and the American Anthropological Association.

Service's primary research interests were cultural evolution, and theory and method in ethnology. He was the author of numerious books, including Cultural Evolutionism (1971) and Origins of the State and Civilization (1975).
