Desmognathous

Desmognathous, refers to a palatal morphotype in birds. The desmognathous condition is characterized by the following traits:

  1. Vomer small or absent
  2. Maxillopalatines meet in mid-line
  3. Palatines and pterygoids articulate with basisphenoidal rostrum

The desmognathous condition is widespread in birds, ranging from Anseriformes to a disparate amalgam of "higher land birds."
