Taxonomy: Finches

Darwin's finches are members of a number of different species and subspecies of finch (family Geospizidae) found on the Galapagos Islands. During Charles Darwin's voyage as naturalist on the HMS Beagle Darwin discovered variations in the beak structure of different populations of finches on the various islands of the archipelago, which he identified as adaptations for feeding on different seeds and berries. This was one of many observations that led Darwin to the theory of evolution by natural selection.
