Crocodiles

Crocodiles are any of 20 extant archosaur reptile species that belong to the family Crocodylidae. There are two genera, Crocodylus and Osteolaemus. Crocodylus has a worldwide distribution, with two species in North America (American and Cuban crocodiles; C. acutus and C. rhombifer), and a third in South America (Orinoco crocodile; C. intermedius), the rest of the species having ranges in Africa, Southern Asia, and Australia. There was a third genus, Tomistoma, containing the species Tomistoma schlegelii, the false gharial, included in the family, but recent studies suggest that it is actually more closely related to the true gharial, and many experts place Tomistoma in family Gavialidae.
