Catholicism is a major denomination of Christianity. Catholics are divided by several separate churches.

  • The Roman Catholic Church
  • The old Catholic Church
  • The Ancient Catholic Church
  • The Liberal Catholic Church

Catholicism has altered its position on evolution over the course of history. While the Catholic Church is responsible for establishing the modern Christian bible, they have wavered on the literal interpretation of scripture. They classically hold that their religious scripture is divinely inspired, but do not claim that it requires a literal reading.

Modern Catholicism tends to ignore the topic of evolution. The Catholic Church, via the pope, has claimed that Evolution does not violate any tenant of Catholicism and that the entire topic is strictly within the realm of science. While there has been some discussion as to the personal convictions of Pope Benedict XVI on the topic, it seems that he will continue Pope John Paul II's policy of acceptance.

Catholicism's stance on evolution may be attributed to previous clashes of the Catholic Church with science. Historical events have reflected poorly on the Catholic Church, and their desire to remove themselves from any debate may be a reflection of this fact.
