Caprimulgiformes, (Aves: Neornithes)

Goatsuckers, and allies. Caprimulgiformes are among the most enigmatic of all birds, largely of unknown origin though doubtlessly close to Strigiformes and derived somewhere near the origin of the land bird assemblage. Caprimulgiformes includes Podargidae, Caprimulgidae, Steatornithidae, Aegothelidae, and Nyctibidae. From an ecological standpoint, these birds are equally curious. They are all cryptically colored, crepuscular or nocturnal, and renowned for their piercing and generally unsettling vocalizations.
