Calcaneus

The calcaneus (also referred to as the calcaneum in zootomy) is a lateral tarsal (ankle) element, which in reptiles often articulates with the fibula superiorly at the ankle joint. It also, in many tetrapods, articulates with the talus and at least one of the centrales. In Crurotarsi, the calcaneum also articulates with the 5th metatarsal at the signature crurotarsal joint.
In Dinosauria, it is the smaller of the two posterior tarsal elements.
