Bible says the earth is unsupported

[edit] Claim

Ancient people thought the earth had to be supported in space. The Bible, on the other hand, says "He [God] suspends the earth over nothing" [Job 26:7]. This shows divinely inspired accuracy.

[edit] Responses

  1. The Bible also says, "The pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he hath set the world upon them" (emphasis added) in 1 Samuel 2:8, and there are numerous references to the "foundations" of the Earth (Job 38:4, Psalms 18:15, etc). Apparently, the Watchtower prefers to pick and choose which parts to consider absolutely literal and which parts (equally seriously presented in the text) to be treated as poetic. One could just as easily declare Genesis 1 as a whole a metaphor and not literal at all.

[edit] Fallacies contained in this claim

  • Exclusion (Bible passages saying otherwise are ignored)
  • Composition (because a part of the Bible is accurate, Bible is accurate)
