Basilosaurus is an extinct genus of the Basilosauridae family of cetaceans that lived in the late Eocene, around 34 Mya to 39 Mya. It was at first thought to be a reptilian sea monster, hence the 'saurus', although it's now known to be in the order Cetacea with whales, dolphins, and porpoises.
