Archaeopterygidae is the monotypic containing clade of the Jurassic bird Archaeotperyx lithographica. Autapomorphies of Archaeotperygidae include (following Elzanowski 2002):
a) Premaxilla with four teeth.
b) Eight to nine teeth on the maxilla.
c) 11-12 teeth on the dentary.
d) Tooth crowns constricted.
e) Premaxilla overhangs dentary.
f) Mandible lacks a mandibular fenestra.
g) Furcula lacks a hypocleidum.
h) Preglenoid of coracoid wing-shaped.
i) Presacral count 23, sacral count five.
