Apoptosis

Apoptosis is the formal name of one form of "Programmed Cell Death," where in a multicelluar organism, one of, or a specific group of cells, receives a signal to "die," so the aforementioned organism gains some particular benefit or advantage. A well known example is the differentiation of fingers during embryological development, where the cell tissue between the fingers initiate apoptosis so that the fingers can separate.
