Allele

In genetics, an allele is one of a number of different versions of the same gene, occupying the same locus, which result in a different phenotype.
In diploid organisms, there can be a different allele occupying the same locus of each chromosome of a chromosome pair (a heterozygous genotype), or the same allele occuring at both loci on a chromosome pair (a homozygous genotype).
